Installation

terminal
php artisan ui:add magnet-lines

Note

This component ships an Alpine behavior module at resources/js/ui/magnet-lines.js. Import it once from your bundle so it registers on alpine:init:

import './magnet-lines.js';

Registry contract

php artisan ui:add magnet-lines writes only the files below. The CLI validates each file hash before writing and asks before it replaces a local change, unless you pass --force.

  • blade resources/views/components/ui/magnet-lines.blade.php
  • js resources/js/ui/magnet-lines.js
Registry dependencies
None — installs on its own.

# Brok UI: Magnet Lines (`magnet-lines`)

A grid of short lines that each rotate to point toward the cursor, creating a magnetic-field look; reduced motion holds every line at its base angle.

Brok UI is a Laravel Blade component registry. Installed components are plain Blade files the app owns.

## Install

```bash
php artisan ui:add magnet-lines
```

## Usage

```blade
<x-ui.magnet-lines class="text-primary" />
```

## Props

- `rows` (int, default `9`) — Number of grid rows.
- `columns` (int, default `9`) — Number of grid columns.
- `lineColor` (string, default `foreground`) — Line colour token: primary, muted, or foreground.
- `lineWidth` (string, default `2px`) — CSS width of each line.
- `lineHeight` (string, default `1.5rem`) — CSS height (length) of each line.
- `baseAngle` (int, default `-10`) — Resting rotation in degrees when no pointer is tracked or motion is reduced.
- `gap` (string, default `1rem`) — CSS gap between grid cells.

## Use when

- Use only when visual expression supports storytelling, brand differentiation, or a clear showcase moment.
- Adding a decorative grid of lines that visually point toward the cursor, for a hero or interactive background accent.
- Wanting a configurable rows/columns grid with a resting base angle that degrades gracefully without JS or motion.

## Avoid when

- Do not place heavy effects in task-dense workflows where clarity, speed, and readability matter more.
- Needing the effect to convey information; it is purely decorative and aria-hidden.
- Building a dense, content-heavy layout; the grid is best as a lightweight background flourish, not a functional UI element.

## Anti-patterns

- Heavy effects in forms or task-dense workflows
- Motion that interferes with reading or focus

## Rules

- Use the `<brok:magnet-lines>` tag (or `<x-ui.magnet-lines>`) in Blade; do not rewrite the component.
- Prefer the documented props and variants over utility-class overrides; when a utility must win, use the `!` important modifier.
- Use semantic design tokens (`bg-primary`, `text-muted-foreground`), never raw colour utilities.
- Keep the `data-slot` attributes; they are the styling and test hooks.

Props

Props accepted by this component: name, type, default value and description.
Prop Type Default Description
rows int 9 Number of grid rows.
columns int 9 Number of grid columns.
lineColor string foreground Line colour token: primary, muted, or foreground.
lineWidth string 2px CSS width of each line.
lineHeight string 1.5rem CSS height (length) of each line.
baseAngle int -10 Resting rotation in degrees when no pointer is tracked or motion is reduced.
gap string 1rem CSS gap between grid cells.

Slots

  • default — Unused; the component has no visible default slot content.

Data slots

Stable hooks for CSS overrides and browser tests.

Behavior

  • On pointer move over the root, magnet-lines.js rotates each line toward the pointer; on pointer leave, every line eases back to baseAngle.
  • Under reduced motion, the JS never attaches a pointer listener, so every line stays fixed at baseAngle.
  • Installs a JavaScript behavior module when the registry item includes resources/js/ui files.
  • Declares registry capability flags: a11y, interactive, responsive, rtl, darkMode, localized, reducedMotion.

Guidance

Expressive and showcase effect

Support brand expression or a showcase moment.

Use when

  • Use only when visual expression supports storytelling, brand differentiation, or a clear showcase moment.
  • Adding a decorative grid of lines that visually point toward the cursor, for a hero or interactive background accent.
  • Wanting a configurable rows/columns grid with a resting base angle that degrades gracefully without JS or motion.

Avoid when

  • Do not place heavy effects in task-dense workflows where clarity, speed, and readability matter more.
  • Needing the effect to convey information; it is purely decorative and aria-hidden.
  • Building a dense, content-heavy layout; the grid is best as a lightweight background flourish, not a functional UI element.

Use instead

  • Static content-first presentation

Anti-patterns

  • Heavy effects in forms or task-dense workflows
  • Motion that interferes with reading or focus

  • The root is aria-hidden since the grid carries no information, only decoration.
  • Line colour comes from a semantic text-* token via bg-current, so it themes correctly in dark mode.
  • Semantic HTML and a stable data-slot attribute for styling and scripting hooks.
  • Focus-visible rings use the ring token, so keyboard focus is always visible.
  • Disabled and invalid states are conveyed to assistive tech, not by color alone.
  • Targets WCAG 2.2 AA; verify contrast in light, dark, admin and customer surfaces in the preview.
  • Labels go through __() and layout uses logical properties (ms-*, text-start), so it mirrors under dir="rtl" — flip the preview to RTL to confirm.
  • Dark mode uses the same semantic tokens under the dark class; high contrast follows forced-color system tokens.
